It’s Been a Wild Ride

For this episode, writers Patricia Cumper and Pauline Walker are joined by debut novelist Hafsa Zayyan, winner of the #Merky Books New Writer’s Prize.

A portrait of the writer Hafsa Zayyan. She has long curly hair and is wearing a khaki long sleeved top and gold necklace.

Hafsa Zayyan won the inaugural #Merky Books New Writers’ Prize in 2019. We Are All Birds of Uganda is her debut novel, inspired by the mixed background from which she hails. In this podcast, she tells us about how she researched her story about immigrants and why she’s reticent to call herself a writer yet.

I’m just so grateful to the Merky team for coming up with this idea of having a competition that anyone who’s not an author can enter, because you had to be unpublished and unrepresented to enter it.
